For years, the Limbic System has benefited from the healthy functioning of its team. However, there have been times when even if one team member was affected due to varied reasons, the entire system moved. Below are just some of the many instances where our team goofed up and we have ever since been cautious of their well-being!
EPILEPSY
(Temporal Lobe Seizure, 2020).
At our company, Temporal Lobe Epilepsy is the most common epilepsy seen in adult clients and is most often caused by hippocampal sclerosis, which is characterised by neuronal loss and gliosis in certain regions of our teammate hippocampus. Sometimes even after giving anti seizure medication to clients, seizures don't stop, this condition is called drug-resistant epilepsy (RajMohan & Mohandas, 2007).
LIMBIC ENCEPHALITIS
(Orbitofrontal Cortex, 2021)
Our Team Members- Hippocampus, Amygdala, Cingulate Gyrus, Insula and Orbital-frontal cortex often involve themselves in Limbic Encephalitis. The consequences often result in an onset of memory loss, dementia, involuntary movements and ataxia (RajMohan & Mohandas, 2007).
DEMENTIA
(Alzheimer’s Disease - Plaques, Tangles, Causes, Symptoms, Pathology and Current Research, 2021)
Our system also faces some degenerative changes that lead to neurodegenerative diseases which we call: Pick’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Hippocampus and dentate gyrus often face wasting away of themselves i.e atrophy. When Alzheimer’s disease occurs, something we call Senile Plaques and Neurofibrillary tangles get dispersed throughout Cerebral Cortex and Basal Ganglia. Also, Hippocampus and Amygdala get involved often leading to these diseases (RajMohan & Mohandas, 2007).
ANXIETY DISORDERS
(2020).
Anterior Cingulate and Hippocampus are known to modulate the activity of Amygdala but when that modulation fails, Anxiety Disorders occur (RajMohan & Mohandas, 2007).
AFFECTIVE DISORDERS
When Frontal lobe, Basal Ganglia, Amygdala and Hippocampus get affected by Affective Disorders, their volume changes. Prefrontal and cingulate activity decreases in times of affective disorders. Our Anterior Cingulate is a master at integration of attentional and emotional output. Hence helping in controlling emotional arousal. Because of dysfunctions in our Anterior Limbic Network team (Thalamus, Striatum and Amygdala). These may collectively cause Bipolar Disorder (RajMohan & Mohandas, 2007).
ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER
(Wiki Targeted (Entertainment), n.d.)
Again, the notorious hippocampus gets enlarged in children and adolescents with ADHD. Clients got affected with ADHD because of the disrupted connections between Amygdala and Orbitofrontal Cortex. This led to behavioural disinhibition in our clients (RajMohan & Mohandas, 2007).
After having seen the kind of problems that arose due to either low connectivity between our team members or any other reason, we conclude that we have come to be more cautious of their healthy functioning. We only hope that our efforts come to fruition in maintaining effective communication between them!
